Krakatau- Indonesia |

Krakatoa, or Krakatau, is a volcanic island situated in the Sunda Strait between the islands of Java and Sumatra in Indonesia, also located in the Ring of Fire. Krakatau is very active, its last eruption was dated March 31, 2014. On August 27th 1883, one of the largest volcanic eruptions in recent history took place on the island of Krakatoa. Four huge eruptions all took place at the same time, and the result was that two thirds of the original island was destroyed, a massive pressure wave was recorded all over the word for days afterwards, and temporary islands were formed by the floating ash. In fact, it was reported that people heard the explosions up to 3000 miles away, in Australia and Africa. The Dutch reported the death toll at around 35000, but most people estimate it was much more than that. Some sources think that 120000 people or more died in these cataclysmic eruptions. Average global temperatures fell and did not go back to normal until 1888. Crazy weather patterns followed this catasrophy as well.
